YOGA FOR THE WORKING MUSICIAN, a guided yoga flow class led by Karen Elaine, is an exploration of efficient body movement.
As musicians, we are conditioned to use repetitive motion of small muscle groups which after years in the practice room and concert stage will result in tendinitis, bursitis, carpal tunnel, arthritis, and a variety of twisted spine compressions that can potentially bring a career to an early end.
Thinking of our bodies as professional athletes, we must do what they do to maximize performance- muscle confusion is a method of mixing up one’s physical exercise so that the large and small muscle groups are given attention throughout the week, thus maximizing one’s performance by focusing alternately on speed/range of motion/strength/coordinated with one’s breath.
As an active orchestral/chamber/solo performer, Karen Elaine is intimately familiar with the demands on the body with an active performing schedule and the need for efficient endurance/focus/control/recovery. Ms. Elaine is a 200-hour RYT (Registered Yoga Teacher) and member of Yoga Alliance. She brings to the mat her training inspirations that include Acrobatic Yoga under the tutelage of Whakapaingia David Luke; Ashtanga Yoga and body alignment under Maria Villella, Bobbi Boston, & Jasmine Lieberman; gymnastics conditioning under Ivan Ivanov; and Power Yoga flow training.
